For young people who like to write, contests can be a great way to gain writing credits and get a feel for what it takes to write professionally. Here’s a list of a few contests that might interest your homeschooler.

VOICE OF DEMOCRACY SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST
The theme of the 2010-2011 Voice of Democracy contest is “Does My Generation Have a Role in America’s Future?”
The scholarship program is an audio-essay contest for high school students in grades 9-12. It annually provides more than $3 million in scholarships. Besides competing for the top scholarship prize, as well as other national scholarships, each Department’s first place winner receives an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.

2010 FRIENDS OF ACADIA POETRY COMPETITION (NO AGE LIMIT!)
Established in 1998, the Friends of Acadia Poetry Prize is presented biannually to promote and recognize distinctive nature poetry. The three top-ranked poems will be published in the Friends of Acadia Journal (print and online.)
Submit nature-based poems of 30 lines or fewer. Each author may submit only 3 poems for consideration. Entries must be original, unpublished, and not submitted elsewhere. Young people may enter. No Age Limit.
There is no fee to enter. Top-ranked poems will be published and awarded cash prizes. Deadline is April 30th, 2010.

ELLEN’S SHORT STORY CONTEST
Write a short story of 1,000 words or less—the subject is yours to choose. Open to all kids in the U.S., ages 9-13.

KAY SNOW WRITING CONTEST
Rules that pertain to Student Writers (18 or under) – There are three categories of student writers. Students can enter any type of writing, fiction, non-fiction, poetry. Word limit, 1,500 words. Students should not enter adult categories unless paying the adult fee. If a student enters an adult category, do not put student or a grade category on the entry form.
Grades 1-5
Grades 6-8
Grades 9-12
Students are limited to ONE entry. There is no fee for student writers in these three grade groups. Students should not enter adult categories unless paying the adult fee. If a student enters an adult category, they should not put student or a grade category on the entry form.
