poetry and good news

Today is “free to rhyme (or not) Friday). Do you have your poetry hat on? If not, go find it. I’ll wait.

Okay, I can’t wait too long. I’ve got children to feed. Hurry up.

Found it? Good. Let’s get started…

Today’s poetry form: TETRACTYS!

If you’ve never heard of this type of poetry, read here for a brief history and good example and here for more examples and definition. If you don’t feel like heading to those sites, here is my summary…

Tetractys: created by Ray Stebbing. A 5 line poem (not including the title). Each line comprised of set number of syllables. 1, 2, 3, 4, 10. If you have a double Tetractys, you have 1, 2, 3, 4, 10 then  10, 4, 3, 2, 1 (it ends up looking like a diamond if you center the entire poem)

Chocolate Doppleganger

Sweet

friend and

nemesis

beckons me to

consume more calories than I expend

expanding the parts that should be shrinking

offending my

sense of style

and my

hips

To borrow from Dr. Seuss, “Try it. You’ll like it!” 🙂

And if you are feeling very adventurous, post your tetractys in the comment section!

Now for my good news: I received a manilla envelope in the mail today from Blue Mountain Arts. They want to put two of my poems/greeting cards in their test market. I sold them a card a couple years ago. So I’d be tickled pink to sell them another one!

Matter of fact, I’d be “pinker” than a flamingo! 🙂

    Donna,

CONGRATULATIONS on two more cards with Blue Mountain Arts. You are on a roll. Yay! I am glad I got to hear your success story bright and early. What a great way to start a day– cheering for you my friend.

I appreciate the poetry challenge. I’ll give it a try.

Maybe it’s a glitch…maybe it’s a way to drive home the challenge, but I thought I’d let you know that I got this message six times. So confess. Was it on purpose or just a glitch?TEASING!

    Thank you for the congrats!

weird about the glitches…cause I got them, too. I thought it was just me! I’m “subscribed” to my own blog to make sure I don’t mess anything up. And this is what I got. VERY weird.

Congrats on the cards! I have great respect for anyone who can write poetry. I have tried and it comes out sounding contrived and forced. Anyhoo, I just wanted to say great job on the cards prospect!

Congrats, Donna, on having more of your work market reviewed by BMA — I’ll be hoping for the best with you!

(By the way, you know that I’ve sold several pieces to them, too, over the years, and as I remember I once heard that they buy only a very small percent of what they market review so try not to get discouraged if these don’t sell. Just keep trying!)

Hey Polly! Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the congrats! 🙂

Cheryl – I didn’t remember you’d sold them stuff, too! Cool beans! Are you still subbing to them?

Even though I’ve had many cards in their test market, they’ve only bought one of them. BUT that sale made me very happy. LOL!

Yes, Donna, I usually submit around 16-18 pieces to them per year, and they’ve gotten to where they market review almost all of what I submit (have been subbing to them for years). I’m thinking I heard it is only about 5% of what they market review that they actually go on to buy. I could be wrong, but I know it’s a small percentage. I always feel lucky if they buy one piece per year out of the 15 or so they market review. They pay well so it’s always time well spent to get that one sale per year (if I’m lucky!). Good luck again!

Congratulations on the Blue Mountain acceptances!!

Eat some chocolate to celebrate! It’s good for you, no matter what the hips say.

Good luck with the cards and congratulations on making it to the test market stage!

I’m not a poet, but I like your Chocolate Doppleganger poem! (BTW, 2 words that really go well together yet I wouldn’t have thought to put them together. Fun.)

Okay. You asked for it. Seems nobody else here is game so I’ll offer my 5 minute TETRACTYS.

    In A Funk

    Down

    Way down

    In a Funk

    To beat all Funks.

To say the least my chin is on the ground.

My eyes droop low, my smile is upside down.

    So I’ll just sing

    Songs of joy

    And climb

    Up.

JEAN! this is wonderful. I like it even more than my chocolate poem. And you KNOW how much I like chocolate.

    VERY nice tetractys, indeed!

    Donna,

Here’s my attempt. I didn’t know how to center it.

    Christmas is Coming

    Rush,
    hurry,
    race around.
    Dash to and fro.
Christmas is coming. Are you ready yet?
    Unprepared now and centuries ago
    in a foreign land,
    a stable bed,
    Our King–
    Jesus.

Good poem, my friend! The last few lines had a few more syllables than necessary, though. What if you rearrange it a little? My suggestions below:

    Rush,
    hurry,
    race around.
    Dash to and fro.
Christmas is coming. Are you ready yet?
    Unprepared now and centuries ago
    they rushed to find
    a swaddled
    baby
    King

    Donna,

OOPS! I didn’t count too well near the end. I like your suggestions for the ending much better. It ties it all together like the perfect gift it is. Thanks so much. I’ll take it. I did have fun, but unlike Jean I played with mine off and on throughout the day. I was at an all-day staff development for my counseling program. My inspiration came from people greeting me and asking, “Are you ready for Christmas yet?” It is a popular question this time of year.
