writing for children

In Honor of Poetry Month

This is a poem I wrote a few years ago…let me know what you think. ENJOY!

February 14

By Donna Earnhardt

On this icky

Yucky day

No one asks

If it’s okay

To fill our class

With girly pink

It makes me sick

and I would think

that anyone

who likes this day

needs to see

a doctor —

What’s this doing

On my desk?

A card and candy?

How grotesque!

But wait,

That candy isn’t pink

Maybe, maybe

It won’t stink

So I’ll just have

A bite or two

And read the card

(it can’t be true!)

But yes, it is

Cause now I see

That Heidi

Has her eye on me.

I can’t believe

What I have done!

I took the bait —

I should have run

I missed the sign,

I crossed the line

Now Heidi is…

my Valentine!

  1. Donna,
This is very cute and a good example of rhyme and meter that works well. May I use it as an example in my writing for children classes? (crediting you, of course) Folks have no idea how hard and important this is. Have you tried to publish it? Sounds like a pb or a poem for Highlights to me!

    1. Thank you, my friend. I don’t remember if I have subbed it to them before or not. I am not so sure they would use it b/c it is quite a bit longer than they say they use in their guidelines.
